East Titchberry Malthouse

Devon

The abandoned Old Malthouse at East Titchberry (National Trust) sits in a poor state just off the South West coast path. The National Trust wanted to explore how to create adaptive reuse for it whilst making it commercially viable. The low beams which housed the malting process, presented a challenge for access to the ground floor.

Thread explored how to use the two levels in the space to create a different entrance.

Our resulting consultation advised a timber structure pod housed in the malthouse, leaving in situ the ecological context - the plant and wildlife - with lighting design which wouldn’t infringe on natural habitat. Original structural repairs cited would’ve caused loss of historic fabric, so Thread found a new way to ensure conservation followed and maintain existing historic building - all designed to preserve.
