Old Lodge

Dyrham Park

In the heart of Dyrham Park (National Trust) lies Old Lodge, a Grade two listed farm complex with significant agricultural heritage.

Our brief - to hold onto that heritage whilst creating a cafe and improving access.

Working with the National Trust, we created an internal timber framed box, which sits in the barn on the existing surface, accommodating kitchen storage and service, whilst concealing all plant equipment. There were to be no visible external extracts on the exterior of the barn.

A key element to integrate with concerned the pathways through the wider park designed by Landscape Architects SEED with Jack Marshall  as well as our work with Western Fabrications on a bespoke design for the louvres and their fixings + hinges - the size of the shingles relate to the size of the keystones, making them proportional. The Old Lodge was restored with original materials which retain a warmth to the building. The lathe and plaster left in situ, with copper chosen to reflect a patina to emulate the old barn which will darken over time, melding with the colours of the surroundings.
