Tone Works
The Historic Dye Works Roof
Phase Three Works - Wellington, Somerset
INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE / BUILDING AT RISK / HE & LUF FUNDED
Phase Three at Tone Works focused on securing the roof structure of the earliest section of the Dye Works - dating from 1837, but adapted many times since. The Roof structure and covering was lost in many places with signifiant timber elements decayed and on the brink of collapse into the adjacent waterway.
Repairs required detailed development of tailored conservation philosophies to address the many different structural and fabric scenarios that we found due to the varied state of collapse of the roof.
All material specifications and procurement were also carefully considered, like the non dyed battens and UK grown Douglas Fir to ensure the conserved roof and structure appeared as authentic as when the doors closed to this section of the building 70 years ago.
Thread were commissioned by Historic England to write a Technical Bulletin on the Tone Works Project. Click to link to document and pdf download.
